Nessa stared off worriedly as Draco and Telery made their jokes. Something was wrong, she could see it on Gemma’s face, and Liam looked like he was in an incredibly awkward situation. She played with the hem of her long draping sleeves with her fingers and bit her glossy lips.
She had decided to go as the Winter Rose Queen Deirdre. There was another Deirdre, the one of the Irish Legend, she had almost decided on her. However she could not resist the idea of a handsome Prince riding into a cursed place to be a forever winter until the spell was broken, chasing it away and bringing summer just behind him as he rode back to his love the Queen. It sent her heart sighing. Her dress was white save for the red blouse. On the sleeves there was a gold tie at her elbows and after that was the white handkerchief sleeves stopping at the tip of her middle finger. She had a gold belt that had a ruby buckle and gold pieces of material hung down from it. Her skirts were the same handkerchief white as her sleeves merrily gliding just above ground. She had a gold headpiece on with a ruby dangling in the middle, more smooth rubies pinned in her dark hair she left down. She had little make up on, her lips were shined, her lashes were already long and dark, she put some shining color onto her cheeks, though it was mostly for the shine than the color for her cheeks were already a pink coral. The white glittering shadow accented at the edges with red made her emerald eyes stand out like lights in the dark. She was happy with the turn out and her red and most comfortable heals made her a few inches taller.
She smiled as Draco and Telery exchanged laughter pretending she had heard what they said. But she decided she needed to know what was going on where she was not. Excusing herself she held her cup of iced water in her hands and hurried across the room to the others her skirts and long sleeves flying behind her, her hair following suit. She tried a smile when she got to them.
“How are things?” She asked finding a seat.

Gemma didn't hear Nessa's question or Pippa's reply, but she did see what was going on between Liam and Fiona. And it didn't look too good.
---
"When did you-erm-find this out?" Liam asked, clearing his throat as they danced.
Fiona smiled a small smile. "For a while now. Since last year."
"And-um-what brought this about?" Liam asked, figiting.
"That song!" Fiona exclaimed. "It was my exact feelings for you too-even though I can't sing worth a darn." she said, laughing in that God forsaken laugh.

"Things are just DANDY," Pippa smiled. "Gemma is jealous."
"I AM NOT!" Gemma snapped.
Pippa threw up her hands in a joking surrender. Garron rolled his eyes.
"I wish he would stop dancing with her." Gemma said, quietly. "He doesn't like her. He's leading her on."
"Would you be very upset if he liked her?" Pippa asked. Gemma looked alarmed and murderous at the same time.
"You don't think he DOES, does he?"
"Of course he doesn't." Garron deadpanned. "I room with the guy, I'm his best friend. I should know."
Gemma still looked down. Pippa leaned forward and whispered to her best friend. "Why don't you go and cut in?" She advised. "And ask him what he meant by that kiss that undid you so much."

Gemma's head popped up, and she turned to look at her best friend. "How did-"
"I saw." Pippa nodded knowingly. "I'm sure your brother wasn't paying attention-although it did seem like ya'll stood in the same place forever!"
"When was I not paying attention?" Garron asked.
Gemma perked up at the sound of the next song for the next dance. She knew this song well...
It was a switching song.
---
"Funny you mention that song," Liam said as the song changed. "Because I actually wasn't singing it to anyone-that is-"
"Oh, I think you're wrong." She said endearingly. "In fact, I know you are."
Liam swallowed. "Do you?"
"Yes," she said knowingly. "No one sings like that without a true passion for someone! I should know." She said thoughtfully.
As Liam twirled Fiona out from his arm, they switched partners-
"Gemma!" Liam suddenly gasped, desperate and relieved at the same time. Something was different though. Gemma looked less like she was enjoying herself, and more...hurt?
"Sunshine, what's wrong?" He asked, the nickname coming like second nature now.
Gemma kept her chin down, her eyes on Liam's cravat. "I have to talk to you."
Liam's voice lightened. "I have to talk to you too but Fiona-"
"I know," she said. "Fiona wanted to talk to you too, so I let her."
Liam blanched. "Why on earth would you do that?"
Gemma raised an eyebrow. "Why not?"
"Because-" They had switched partners again, and it was getting trying the farther the dance went. They would only get a couple words in edge wise during their dance, until finally, when they were dancing together again, Liam pulled Gemma off the dance floor.
"Damn that song!" He growled.
Gemma looked slightly distressed. "Liam, I have to ask you something."
Liam looked at her, and nodded. "Anything."
Finally, her eyes met his. "What-what was that kiss? I mean," she shook her head. "What did it mean?"
Not too far away, unbeknowest to both, Fiona Assen stood by the fire place, listening.
---
"Are you sure he doesn't like her?" Pippa asked, concerned.
"Well," Garron cringed. "He likes her-Fiona, I mean but-surely he can't like a jackle like that!"
Pippa gave Garron a look. "She is gorgeous, Garron."
"Of course she is-" Pippa glared. "I mean...sure, I guess." He laughed hesitantly.
Liam was right, Garron thought whimsically. That girl can totally take command. It made him smile.

Nessa sat smiling knowingly to herself as she listened to the conversation between Pip and Garron. She was good at eavse dropping, it was a talent to become un-noticed by others so she could just sit and listen.
She frowned, or maybe she was just easily forgotten? She shrugged to herself and sipped at her water and looked around deciding no matter what it was it did not matter. But whatever was going on in Gemma and Liam's little corner a certain some one did not look too pleased.

"Gemma," He said, completely unaware of Fiona's presence nearby. "I care about you. A lot. Otherwise I wouldn't have kissed you."
Gemma looked at him... confused? Scared? He couldn't read her face at all. "You care for me?" She said, her voice very quiet.
Liam pulled her closer to him, her hands splayed across his chest. "I have ever since I first met you, Sunshine. Now... do you love me?"

Gemma's eyes widened and her gaze froze up to Liam's eyes. She looked scared, just a little, but she was able to smile the sweetest smile Liam had ever seen. When she whispered, her breath was shaky, but her voice filled with mirthful delight.
"Yes."
And another heart broke, just behind the fireplace.

"You do?" Liam said, staring at her... in a sort of disbelief. He smiled, and brushed back her hair that was in her face and tucked it behind her ear. A tender move.
Fiona came from behind the fireplace. She stared at them, crying, biting her lips. Liam, for one of the first times in his life, felt guilty. But she nodded slowly in understanding, and backed away slowly facing them, then turned away to rejoin her friends.
"I think we have her blessing," Liam said, slipping his fingers in Gemma's. ----
"Congratulations," Pippa whispered to Garron. "Your sister just found her mate."
Garron looked anything but overjoyed. In fact, he looked rather upset.
"You're not happy for her?" Pippa said, her smile faltering a great deal.
Garron remained silent, staring at the two of them.
"How can you not be happy for them? Look how happy they are." Pippa said, pointing at the two of them. "They would be happy for us."
"He's my best mate." Garron said, still taking it all in. "And she's my sister. This is all wrong."
Pippa was devastated. "I think it's perfect. How can you not support them? They like each other so much... that's all they need."
She got up and sat away from him, disgusted.

Gemma felt so numb, as if she were laying on a bed of ice-but there was a thrilling rush tumbling in her stomach that made her almost shiver with delight. Something inside her sparked, and without another thought, she through herself at Liam, arms slipping around his neck.
Liam looked surprised at her suddeness, but laughed it off warmly and spun her around. "Ah, my nightingale." he sighed, kissing her hair that smelled of plumeria flowers.
Gemma was about to reply, but closed her mouth and smiled into Liam's shoulder. Fate had irony in store, for he was her raven-though she was masqueraded as one tonight too.
Laughing, happy again, although still a let down by the outcome for Fiona, Gemma slipped down from Liam's hold and pulled him to the dance floor. "Dance with me!" She laughed in a sing song voice, almost like a little girl.
---
Garron looked troubled, and would not look up at Pippa, who was now mad with him, or at his sister and best friend. Garron did look up to see Dumbledore and McGonagoll dancing together, and several of the professors enjoying themselves. He sighed, rubbing his temples.
Out of everyone you could have fallen for, he thought. Damnit, it Liam-why my sister?
---
Pippa spotted the one person she knew she could confide in. She got up from the table, leaving Garron to watch her stride across the room and head for Hagrid, who was sitting alone watching the festivities with a smile that could beat the sun.

Pippa was completely furious. Who does he think he is?
For goodness sake, they were his sister and his best friend. He should be happy! Happy that it was Liam, not some jerk-off like Taylor Niapssa. Proud! GRATEFUL!
Ohhh, Pippa was steamed. She kept her lips pursed and both of the two parties involved steadily avoided each other's gaze.
"What's amiss, Pip?" Hagrid said. Pippa banged down her bottle of butterbeer, having drank right out of the bottle.
"Hagrid, do you know just how STUPID some men are?" Pippa said, poking the table with her pointer finger in emphasis to her words.
Hagrid nodded. She was in the mood where she just had to talk; and it didn't even matter if Hagrid paid attention or not. But politely, he did.
"Got sommat in mind, Pip?"
"GARRON DARLING!" She growled, pointing him out.
"Ah," Hagrid said, feeling awkward.
"Excuse me," A boy said, standing beside her. Pippa looked up. It was John, from the lake. "Pippa, since you are free from Darling's clutches, dance with me. I won't take no for an answer."
"Well then," Pippa said while standing up, with a pointed glare at Garron across the room. "I won't disappoint you." ---
"She's doing that on purpose." Garron spat, watching Pippa prance around with that fop Salmon. He was named after a fish for goodness sakes. How could she ever find HIM worthy of her time?
Liam and Gemma looked uncomfortable.

Gemma bit her lip, glancing at her brother who's eyes were glued to Pippa. Liam looked at them too, but he looked back and forth quickly, still leading Gemma around the room in their dance.
"This is going to turn out badly." said Gemma.
Liam sighed. "I have a feeling you're right."
Gemma's eyes widened when she saw who Pippa's dancing partner was. "Oh no."
Liam twirled them about so he could see what she was looking at. His own gaze darkened, but did not loose the concern for his best friend. "I have a feeling..."
"If you're thinking it involves John Salmon getting a black eye thanks to my brother, I'm thinking it too." Gemma said.
"I'm still trying to figure out what went wrong." Liam said thoughtfully.
She nodded in response. "Me too-they were so blissful not an hour ago." As the song ended, Liam saw that Tony was gesturing him to come play a song.
"Will you excuse me, my dear?" Liam said, bowing like a dance master.
Gemma smiled. "Go, before you get in trouble." When she saw that Liam was seated at the piano, she walked over to Garron and stood beside him. He hadn't noticed her, eyes still glued to Pippa who took the next dance with John Salmon again.
"Gare," She whispered, touching his shoulder.
He jumped in surprise, and turned to look at her. He wasn't happy at all, apparently with her as well.
"Dance with me, please?" she asked, batting her eyelashes.
Without a word, (and so solemnly!) Garron stood up and took his sister into the next dance. Good, she thought. One more thing to preoccupy his mind-help him to not pay attention.
"Why don't you tell me what happened?" She asked, concerned, well aware that Pippa kept glancing their way. She'd have to talk to her too.

Lessien cautiously entered the ballroom knowing that the dress she had on was probably more revealing than the professors would like and slightly nervous about her boyfriend's reaction. She had a medium silver crown on top of her head it covereda long gauzy like deep Slytherin green material that lay to just under her shoulders. Her long dark hair was charmed slightly wavy as it flowed down her back. It was her dress that showed a little more cleavage than anyone was used to from her, okay, a whole lot more. It was a beautiful flowing matching green that simply had a v-neck with a silver rope just under her chest and a flowing bottom from her waist to her mid calf, leaving her shoulders bare. (OOC: I can't describe very well. Obviously. But it's supposed to be something like this: img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/BabyD/27bb0a5c.jpg)The moment she entered the room however her mind wandered as she took in the decorations. "Thurgood is that you?" She turned towards the voice, "Hello Aiden." "Who are you supposed to be?" "I couldn't decide on a famous witch so I choose two and this," she waved a hand at her outfit, "is my cross between the two." At his still inquiring look she laughed lightly, "I'm Queen Maeve and Laverne de Montmorency of course." He smiled, "I see. You look lovely." He glanced around turning back to Lessien when she giggled. "Looking for Nessa are we?" "How did you know?" "Because you two are impossible. You need to tell her how you feel for her before it's too late." She smiled when he frowned, "She's over there." When he automatically went in the direction she pointed her smiled grew bigger. OOC: When I was researching my, uh, famous witches I found one perfect for Nessa if you don't have one already. Her name is Cassandra Vablatsky and she was a celebrated seer and author in HP land. I figured she was a perfect match since Nessa has visions, making her a seer as well.

"I don't want to talk about it," Garron deadpanned.
Gemma was taken aback by her brother's attitude. Whatever it was, it was upsetting him a great deal. "Don't you want to tell your baby sister?" She pried.
"Yes, you are my baby sister," Garron rounded on her. "And it's my duty to protect you. And I'll protect you against my best friend if I have to." Gemma's mouth dropped at Garron's words. "Gem, I've seen him with other girls," He said, speaking over whatever argument Gemma had tried to prepare. "He uses them all like tissues, and moves on to the next pretty face. He's a trophy collector. And I won't have him using you."
Gemma looked hurt. No wonder Pip had been upset. He had, in one fell swoop, totally insulted her childhood friend, and also been completely pig-headedly protective over something that totally didn't need his protection.
In short, he had been a MAN.
"Well, Garron, I've grown up, and I don't require your protection any longer." Gemma informed her brother. "And I assure you he won't use me like a... tissue." She was rather offended.
---
Pippa was exceedingly sorry she had accepted John's offer to dance. He was talking about how many things he had, how many times he had seen the Holyhead Harpies in person, why he liked Puddlemere United...
Now, Pippa liked quidditch. There was absolutely nothing wrong with sports. But there was something called "too much", and John was flirting with the border.
Suddenly, he changed subject. "Ever since the lake, I couldn't get you out of my mind."
"What?" Pippa spluttered.
"Even though that Darling was there, I knew we had a connection..." He trailed off.
Pippa started to panic.

"Garron, I can't believe you." Gemma said with a dastardly attitude. "How can you be SO low?"
Garron glared at her, but before he could say anything, Gemma saw Pippa's expression and...something else. Something that shouldn't have happened on John Salmon's part.
"Uh, Garron?" She asked, concerned.
"Gemma, don't interrupt me-"
"But Gare-"
"You ARE my baby sister, and my responsibility. Just because we're at school does not give you the freedom to DO whatever you feel like..." Under normal circumstances, Gemma probably would have set him on fire, or something of the like. HOWEVER-she was too preoccupied with the scene across the dance floor.
"GARRON!"
"WHAT!?" He shouted right back.
She stopped dancing and flung him around in time to see John Salmon pulling Pippa way too close.
Garron didn't just loose it. He totally combusted with anger. Marching across the dance floor, he practically shoved John Salmon away from Pippa. Gemma ran over and took her into a hug and they staggered away, nearly tripping over their dresses.
Liam stopped playing, rising up so fast he knocked over the bench.
Without another word, Garron threw his arm back, and burried his knuckles into John Salmon's nose.
"Oh my God." Liam, Pippa, and Gemma all chorused.
